What a fabulous week we had last week! We are looking forward to so many more :)
Just so you know, every student should have a decorated, laminated manila envelope with their name on it in their backpack. We will be sending these home when the students have mail, which could be finished work, permission slips or information about Bowman events. Please empty the bag and return it with your student the next day. Feel free to send us notes in the bag, and to return permission slips that way (although not cash money!).
Tonight, inside you will find two "At Home" activities:
The first is about the book Chrysanthemum, which we will be reading tomorrow in class. There is a place on the back for the student to write about their "special name" and where it comes from. Please take the time tonight to discuss the "origin" of their name and help them write a bit about it. If you would like to do the writing because they are very tired (School is exhausting!) that is fine. This is less about practicing writing and more about connecting home, school and family. If you do not have time tonight you can send it with your student Thursday or Friday and we will make time to share theirs.
The second is an activity called the "Paper Bag Activity", with instructions on what to do. We will start sharing those bags next Tuesday after Labor Day, but you can send them in early if you'd like. In case you never received one because your student forgot to bring home their mail bag, I have attached the directions to the bottom and you can use a "lunch bag" size paper bag from home :)
In regards to homework, please note that research does not yield a connection between homework and increased success in school. However, it does demonstrate a highly positive relationship between reading at home and academic success. In addition, there are apps which can be very educational and support your child's learning. Occasionally we will have at-home projects or activities (such as this Chrysanthemum activity or Student of the Week) that are meant to help students create connections between the school family group and their own family. We will provide more information about suggestions for optional at-home opportunities at the Parent Orientation.
Many of you may have heard that Shoshana has had a family emergency and will be out of town throughout next week and back on Tuesday, September 6th. We are in the process of securing a seasoned substitute who can work with me during that first week to support the 1-2 Family Group. I will be taking care of all of our wonderful 1st and 2nd graders on their first week as well as any concerns and questions you may have. Please be patient over the next week- with twice as many students and only one of me I may not be as responsive as we normally would be as a team!
In addition- we will be moving the parent orientation to the following Thursday:
Thursday, September 8th
Also next week is the Fall BOOP Picnic, which will take place on
Wednesday, September 7th
In the meantime, reach out if you are available to volunteer next week in the classroom, we have had SO MANY fabulous helpers already, and offers we need to follow up on as well :)
Thanks for being the wonderful family group that you are, and know that Shoshana is missing you all and wishes she could be here. I'm certain we are all sending her our good wishes.
Also: our yearly master schedule had one change, reflected below. Please replace any copy you already printed/downloaded so you have the appropriate schedule!
We had such a wonderful first day of school! We read books, acted out SEL (social-emotional learning) situations, practiced routines and had a STEM activity where students built towers using teamwork and ingenuity. We have some great photos of today that we'd like to share with you, but first we will need each of you to sign a Media Release so we can post classroom photos on the website! We've attached one below for you to download and print and will also have hard copies on hand in the classroom that you can pick up in person. We couldn't ask for a more fabulous group of Elders and can't wait for our Youngers to join the Family Group.
It was SO wonderful to see so many of your smiling faces at our Back to School Night! We had a fabulous time and are even more excited about the upcoming year. The next several weeks will provide volunteer opportunities, both inside and outside of the classroom. We already had a fabulous number of people sign up to help out, and some even took home spray paint and clip boards (we have one more can if you're feeling feisty).
If you are available, we would love your support in either area. You can sign up by commenting below (we haven't tried this yet, so if it doesn't work please just e-mail both of us):
firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com
In addition, be aware that our
will be happening on
Wednesday, August 31st from 6-7pm.
At this time we will have more formal sign-ups for on-going Volunteer Opportunities. You will also learn more about the school year, classroom routines, and of course, us teachers. Please make sure that you can attend, and know that this is a parent-only event and a great opportunity to learn about our Program.
UPDATE for FIRST GRADE FAMILIES: Please bring in a 2'' 3-Ring Binder for your first grader's Portfolio!
Dear 1-2 Family Group,
We hope you had a wonderful and fun-filled summer, we certainly did. The first day of school is nearly upon us and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on a year of learning with you. Here is some information about the upcoming school year to help prepare you and your child for the wonderful school year to come!
The first week of school will be primarily for 2nd graders, taking part in our “Elder Training”, however, we asked parents of 1st graders to sign up students for a morning session on either Thursday, August 25th OR Friday, August 26th to be introduced into the classroom by the elders and “coached” for the upcoming year. Their true first day will be on Monday, August 29th. If you have not signed up your 1st Grade student please do so here:
In regards to supplies, rather then preparing a list we request that you pay a classroom supply fee of $35 (please make checks out to BOOP), allowing us to purchase consistent supplies in bulk for the different family group needs this year. The BOOP program as a whole additionally asks for a separate donation of $35 to fund program events. If you’d like to pay both at once please just put in the memo line on checks “$35 for ½, $35 for BOOP”. The only specific request we have is to ask that Families with last names A-H bring in disinfectant wipes, I-P bring in tissues and Q-Z bring in Ziploc bags.
There will be many classroom events and meetings over the first couple of weeks of school, including the opportunity to hear about our philosophies and plans for the year, as well as a “Parent Volunteer Training” where we will introduce you to the many different ways you can participate in and support learning in our classroom.
Stay tuned for these, and other, program and school events!
All our best,
Rosalind and Shoshana
